"A high-quality geography education should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.”

— National Curriculum

‘’PSHE education should also enable children and young people to reflect on clarify their own values and attitudes, and explore the complex and sometimes conflicting range of values and attitudes they encounter now and will do in the future’’

National Curriculum

Did you know that the Department of Education National curriculum in England for Key stage 1 and 2 states. A high-quality geography education should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives Over the year the school packs can be delivered as one off class packs or yearly subscription of 6 per year.

Teaching should equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. I believe these boxes can do just that. Boxes encourage the collection of flags just like a stamp in your passport, a Map,tangible items to touch and feel as well as facts, recipes, role models and music.

The curriculum also states as pupils progress, their growing knowledge about the world should help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes. This includes the use of World maps.

Pupils can enjoy filling the 'travel journal' with pieces from their box, pictures, photos of the experience , or they can write what parts they really loved about learning with their class journey to another country. The box can be adapted and used again and again as a useful resource.

There is a whole host of related activities that they can do in the classroom or at home including the music, language, recipe, colouring or focusing on the fact sheets, role models or landmarks.

The School Box

We can provide bespoke boxes for classrooms of clubs please get in touch and we are happy to cater for the size of your class for a group experience.

In the classroom

Travel outside the box was designed to appeal to children from age 5-9 and their families. As the whole experience is built around a family meal time, busy family members can come together, get involved in fact finding, discussions, have fun preparing and tasting new foods and enjoying music. This can spark an interest with children to enjoy as a class trying new foods whilst sparking in an interest in learning about different cultures and countries and the beauty around the world.

Bi monthly a facts sheet, music links, with landmarks and role models will arrive for all to enjoy and discuss as a class.  A prop is included in each box, to serve as a reminder of their experience, for example, the Mexico themed box contains Henna Tattoo, a beautiful bracelet and why it is used and significant. All boxes also have a recipe, colouring sheets, fact pages, and a craft or activity.

Pupils will learn about a different culture each time and build a good knowledge of capital cities, country flags, typical foods, traditions, language, customs, religions there will also be a role model originated from that country so pupils can be inspired by a whole range of inspiring people.

The props or souvenirs in each box will get the children talking as it will engage all the senses such as sound , touch and smells as some boxes contain spices from around the world. – it could be a customary garland from India, a red envelope and chop sticks from china.

Expanding knowledge and evokes important discussions

Get them thinking: Pupils will be able to imagine what the differences are in other countries. It is the golden thread through the curriculum ensure they receive a rich education.

Channel emotions: Teach children about different cultures and help them feel safe and accepting of differences later on in life. Music links in the boxes help pupils, relax and have fun and can help develop cognitive development, reduce stress and encourages creativity.

Reuse of fact sheets and information: photocopy the facts sheets, colouring, role models, for everyone to try.

Link religious customs or beliefs to each country: where appropriate it is designed to help pupils understand other cultures and values different to their own in a safe and sensitive way.

Improve language and social skills: teach words and phrases in different langauges and as they grow and interact with a wide range of social groups with confidence as they have learn about people who might look different to themselves.

Promotes differences: Pupils can talk openly about questions of race, skin colour, inclusivity, and avoid unintentional blindness and potential insensivity to values of members of other cultures. I take care in including role models breaking the mold and taking inspiring actions from all over the world to celebrate inclusivity, women and people from a range of ethnic minorities will also feature.
