Re-learning to be culturally proud

Updated: May 16, 2022

I moved from my family home when I was 18 years old after watching my brother get an arranged marriage he did not ask for or necessarily want. I left home to chase my dreams of becoming the first Indian female police officer in my community.

I left my family behind, my culture , my language, my traditions some what because it felt soo oppressive and tight to live out my desires as a modern, courage, ambitious independent women.

As time passed it was all the traditions, customs and most of all the Indian Bollywood movies in the background I missed. It wasn’t the 3 hour story plot but the music which used to have me in a trance and its didn’t matter that I couldn’t understands each and every word. More than Hindi songs I loved Bhangra songs. The ones which make you want to get up and dance uncontrollably. I experienced the feeling of isolation from my religion and cultures. As this had begun t blend into one. I felt like I was slowly losing my heritage and my two worlds could not be combined.

It was only in my years after becoming a mum I began not even speaking Punjabi again and forgetting how to understand it.

Musical is a universal language . Children will naturally bob, jiggle, leap or clap their hands to the sound of music regardless of where is has come from. Travel outside the Box spreads the joy and appreciation for music and dance from around the world once box at a time.

Young children learn by activity involved in the process , exploring and experiment through copying and acting out. Learning movement and sound from songs from other cultures develop physical skills as well as becoming more socially and emotional competent.

Why multicultural music can be important for us and our children

  1. Sounds of another lanuage encourage concentration

  2. They learn movement and sound

  3. Its time to let our hair down , dance like noones watching

  4. Songs develop physical skills

  5. Music enhances ability for children to become emotionally competent

Learning together in a fun and immersive way, using music and food, can help develop and enhance sensory awareness, encourage creativity and promote self-expression. Learning about different cultures can help children to grow and interact with a wide range of social groups and build confidence.
